Why volunteer?
Volunteers are the heart, brain, and muscles of PAWS. The time
and effort volunteers invest help clients stay with their beloved animal
companions. And it’s a great way to connect with other animal lovers in our
area. Come join us! |
 |
How to volunteer:
The best way to get involved with PAWS is to come to one of our
orientations. The orientations will be held once a month with the date to
be announced. The orientations will be held at the Albany Damien Center 12
South Lake Ave. Albany. The orientation should last about an hour and a
half. Advance sign-up is not necessary. If you have any questions about
becoming a volunteer, contact Diane Metz at 518/944-3223 or by email at
info@PAWSNYCapitalRegion.org. If you call with your name
and phone number we will call you a day or two before the orientation. |
 |
Who can volunteer for PAWS?
We need people of all different skill levels and interests. We
will do our best to match you up with volunteer opportunities you will
enjoy. Most of our volunteer opportunities are open to people of any age.
You must, however be 18 years of age to carry out direct client volunteering
such as dog walking and cat care, unless accompanied by an adult. |
 |
What if I don’t live in Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga, or Rensselaer
counties?
At this time, PAWS NY Capital Region is only able to accept
volunteers from our four county target area. Volunteers are always welcome
from outside the four county areas to assist in our outreach and fundraising
activities. |
 |
When can I volunteer for PAWS?
We need help at a variety of different times. PAWS volunteers
have all different kinds of schedules and availability. We need people for
animal care days and evenings. We need help with our pet food bank on
Saturday mornings. We need people with vehicles to bring clients and their
pets to the vet. We also need help with special events and outreaches at
various times. |
 |
Do
I need to commit to a long time in order to volunteer?
Most PAWS volunteer opportunities are one-time commitments, this means you
sign up for the day and have no responsibility afterwards. There are,
however, several opportunities we do ask for a longer commitment on. For
dog walking and cat care we ask for a six month commitment after you try the
commitment a couple of times.

VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTIONS
Volunteers on dog walking teams help walk dogs for
clients who are bed-bound or homebound. We ask that volunteers take on pets
closest to their own neighborhood. Dog-walking volunteers usually walk a dog
one to three times per week on a team of scheduled volunteers. After trying the
walking position several times, we ask for a six-month commitment.
Volunteers
on cat care teams clean cat pans for clients who are unable to clean the pan.
Volunteers are responsible for one cleaning a week unless otherwise arranged.
We ask that volunteers take on pets closest to their own neighborhoods. After
trying the cat care position several times, we ask for a six-month commitment.
While it is
rare, we will sometimes have requests for in-home help with other pets such as
birds, bunnies, and fish. We also get requests for specific needs sometimes as
bathing or nail clipping. Care instructions will be provided.
List
We are
constantly in need of office volunteers. Volunteers help in the office making
phone calls, data entry, and mailings and just about everything else under the
sun. The PAWS office located at the Albany Damien Center is open Monday thru
Friday from 1 to 3.
Monthly we
distribute pet food, cat litter, toys and other supplies to our clients. The
Pet Food Bank, located at the Albany Damien Center, is open the first Saturday
of the month from 10:30am to 12:30pm. Help onsite as clients pick up their pet
supplies or as a rider or driver making deliveries to clients who are housebound
or lack transportation.
Our pets
need your help to get to their vet or grooming appointment. PAWS volunteers
with cars can be a big help by providing the transportation.
List
Often PAWS
will need help picking up donated items or taking donated items to our food
bank. If you have a car or truck, transportation of pet supplies is one great
way to help.
PAWS is
constantly looking for help organizing and running its fundraisers.
PAWS outreach
is important for spreading the word about what PAWS does. Outreach staffers set
up and staff tables at animal events and fundraisers for PAWS.
